NAATI-Certified Translations: What You Need to Know
The basics: What is NAATI?
NAATI stands for the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters in Australia. In simple terms, NAATI sets the standards for translators and interpreters, ensuring quality and credibility within the profession across the country.
NAATI-Certified translations hold legal validity and are officially recognised by Australian authorities. This means that if you are applying for a visa, citizenship, or another government process , translations from a NAATI translator are usually required for documents written in a Language Other Than English (LOTE).
What makes a NAATI-Certified translator different?
Being a NAATI-Certified translator goes beyond being bilingual. We are trained language professionals who meet strict requirements, including:
Proven language competency: They must have a high level of competency in their certified languages and pass strict tests to demonstrate their skills and experience.
Qualifications: Many NAATI-Certified translators and interpreters have completed a specialised translation and/or interpreting course at university or vocational level.
Ethics and Professionalism: Abiding by the AUSIT code of ethics, which sets the standards for ethical conduct, covering important principles such as confidentiality, impartiality and professional conduct.
Ongoing Learning: Obtaining NAATI-Certification isn’t a one-off. Engaging in professional development and training activities are required to maintain language skills and keep informed about industry standards and developments.
Recertification: NAATI-Certification must be renewed every 3 years by demonstrating proof of ongoing professional work and development.
But don’t worry - once your translation is issued, it stays valid indefinitely, even if the translator’s certification later expires.
What documents need NAATI-Certified translation?
With more than six years of experience as a NAATI-Certified Italian to English translator, I have a thorough understanding of the standards required for submitting your documents in Australia.
